Happy 9th Birthday, Mohit!
Today is the 9th birthday of my Compassion child, Mohit!
He lives in a small rural town in India and is now able to go to school and be a part of church there with others in his community and people from Compassion International. For years, I was moved to tears by the sight of a child in need but somewhere along the line of my teen years and not having the money (or not realizing I had the money) to make a difference I lost that passion. Last fall, I was spending some time in the word one night when I read just one small scripture and was convicted about how much I actually did and gave to those in need. My first thought was to get a Compassion child to sponsor and tell about Jesus to.Through a while of praying, my roommate and I decided quickly at the Passion 2011 conference in Atlanta that God wanted us to sponsor a child. Through back and forth letter writing with him since then, I have come to love this little boy so extremely much. It's not often that I get to hear from him, but he is always in my prayers. The last letter I received from him a few weeks ago he told me "I am so glad that you love me, I love you too." It's often hard for me to truly recall that letter because that one line continuously plays through my mind. I feel so blessed that I have an opportunity to be apart of this program and have such a sweet and bright little boy. To see Mohit write and tell me how he got a blanket for Christmas because of my sponsorship, seems like such a small thing but to him means the world.
A blanket. Our Christmas list, including my own, grows extremely long with the latest technology that came out or a set of new clothes while he was simply thankful for some more food and a blanket. I think at that, we could all afford to make some sacrifices in our life to provide these essentials to a child who barely even has food, something that we take for granted. Sure, you've heard this spill before on every cheesy commericial or tv show just trying to get your money but Compassion is much different and let me just say it is never so real til you actually are seeing it happen right before you.
Being able to be Mohit's sponsor is one of the biggest blessings I've had this year on top of being surrounded by people who share the same heart for him and all of those in need. I ask that you continue to pray for Mohit's well being, safety, family, and salvation. I encourage you to sit before God and reflect on where your money goes. Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. For those of you who know me, you know my love for shopping and style. At the beginning of the summer, I reflected more on my finances and realized it was time to surrender that part of my life to God. I began a 1 year fast of no shopping. During that time, I've been able to greater give to Mohit and others around me now that my money is viewed as not my own but God's. I encourage you to look around in your life today and see what you're holding on to and God might be asking you to surrender. Maybe you increase your tithe to your home church. Maybe God is asking you to sponsor a Compassion child. Maybe He is simply asking for your time to sit before Him in prayer and study His word. Trust and ask, God will lead you to a heart to give through His word and show you ways that you may be able to truly selflessly give.

There is not much more heartbreaking to me than poverty. It is devasting. It takes lives, it wrecks hope and dreams. It sickens the innocent and removes the innocence from the young. Thankfully, God is bigger than poverty. And through extraordinary organizations like Compassion we are able to make a small dent, that in turn has HUGE rewards by sponsoring a child in poverty. Sponsoring Mohit only since January 1st, 2011 has already made such a huge impact on my heart.
